Don’t beat yourself up over your crappy assessment skills, brother. Once, while tolerating the last x and her Midwestern dry parents at their lake condo (“tolerating” meaning attempting to float my liver right out of my abdomen on wave of beer), I was asked to assess an older lady who was complaining of back pain after a short boat ride. I found her prone on her couch surrounded by family looking as if they were prepared to call the undertaker. I slurred through my questions, all geared appropriately (“hey lady, whassup!?!?). After a while I recommended rest and advil, washed down with a stiff and very dry martini….and one for me, too, thank you very much. About four hours later, roughly two hours after I had passed out, she was airlifted to the closest trauma center. X-rays indicated her back was broken in four different places…..paramedic king? No. Lyric king. They won’t confuse that little bit of info again…
